Gender-Based Violence Policy Of The Gambia (2024-2033)

The Gambia’s Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Policy is a comprehensive framework aimed at addressing the pervasive issue of gender-based violence within the country. Recognising GBV as a violation of human rights and a significant barrier to social and economic development, the Policy outlines strategic interventions to prevent, respond to, and eliminate all forms of GBV in The Gambia.

The Policy seeks to:

  1. Strengthen The Gambia’s legal and institutional framework by advocating for legal and policy reforms, and by promoting the enactment, implementation, and enforcement of laws that protect individuals’ rights and prevent GBV.
  2. Strengthen response, care, and support mechanisms by enhancing the capacity of health, law enforcement, and social service sectors to provide effective support and services for GBV survivors.
  3. Improve coordination and collaboration among stakeholder institutions addressing GBV in The Gambia, ensuring that a holistic and unified approach is adopted across all sectors.
  4. Enhance leadership, prevention, and awareness on GBV through a multifaceted approach that empowers leaders via education, awareness campaigns, and community engagement, and promotes a culture of zero tolerance toward GBV.
  5. Promote the economic and social empowerment of women and girls by supporting economic opportunities, improving access to education, and advocating for financial equality in the workplace to reduce the economic vulnerability of women and girls.
  6. Improve data collection, monitoring, and research on GBV to inform evidence-based policy decisions and track national progress.

The GBV Policy will be implemented through a multi-sectoral approach involving key stakeholders, including government ministries, NGOs, CSOs, and international partners. The Policy includes a detailed action plan outlining clear roles, responsibilities, and timelines for each stakeholder.

The Gambia GBV Policy represents a critical step towards a society free from violence and discrimination. By addressing the root causes of GBV and providing comprehensive support for survivors, the policy aims to create a safer, more equitable environment for all Gambians.
