Promotion of Commercial Mushrooms Production in Nigeria and Gambia
Highlight
UPi and Mbeng Adio Mushroom Farm (MAMF) are transforming women and youth involvement in commercial mushroom production in Nigeria and Gambia.
The Challenge
The global mushroom market is estimated to be USD 35.08 billion and is expected to grow to reach USD 59.48 billion by 2021. However, mushroom production is decreasing, especially in key countries where mushroom demand is increasing. Ultimate Partners (UPi) has entered into a partnership with Mbeng Adio Mushrooms Farm (MAMF) for the commercialization of mushroom production in Nigeria and the Gambia.
The Approach
Produce and market Agaricus and oysters mushrooms by constructing a state-of-the-art greenhouse farm for the production of mushrooms. Based on demand, organic mushrooms will be produced for a niche market in the U.S. and elsewhere. The attainment of these specific objectives will be measured based on sustainability, profitability, and competitiveness in mushroom production and marketing domestically and internationally.
The Results
- Construct a world-class state-of-the-art mushroom multipurpose greenhouse, including a water rotational system, solar system, and transportation system for distribution domestically and internationally
- Build the capacity of women and youth and organize them into mushroom producers’ cooperatives
- Identify and nurture domestic and high-end export markets in the U.S., China, and Europe through vertical integration of mushroom-producing organizations, distributors, processors, and marketers in high-end markets.
