FAGRIB-Cameroon Sustainable Cocoa Project
Highlight
An inclusive agricultural value chain is good socially, environmentally, and business-friendly.
Public-Private Partnership (PPP) is a promising dynamic for enhancing a system-based approach to sustainable cocoa production.
The Challenge
To end decades of predatory systems where cocoa farmers earn less than seven percent in the chocolate value chain, we have adopted an ‘open-book’ system that thrives on transparency –thus, minimizing extortion practices against cocoa farmers.
The Approach
UPi has entered into a long-term partnership agreement with Futures Agribusiness (FAGRIB) for the promotion of the ongoing FAGRIB-Cameroon Sustainable Cocoa Project (FCSCP). FCSCP is a PPP initiative with a mission to position Cameroon as a Fine or Flavor cocoa-producing country, while significantly sustainably improving quality and quantity. Our approach leverages the know-how and capital resources of the private sector, coupled with donor support, to help build a market-based sustainable cocoa system.
The Results
FAGRIB and UPi are seeking to improve Cameroon’s visibility in the international market through certification and traceability:
- Boost revenue of cocoa farmers and other upstream actors through promotion of an inclusive value chain using a ‘farm-to-the-table’ model
- Certification: food safety, methods of production, quality, and environmental and social safeguards
- Traceability: cocoa is effectively traced along supply chains – expanding market opportunities
- Minimize carbon footprint in cocoa production through carbon sequestration.
